Masterful Words by John Eshleman,
Masterful Words by John Eshleman,
Masterful Words is a valuable new reference for anyone who loves words, wants to expand their vocabulary, or needs to build their communications skills. Part I of the book teaches the basics of how prefixes and suffixes can determine the meaning of words. Examples used include benevolent and malevolent, xenophile and xenophobe. Part II explains the relationship between old words (usually Latin or Greek) and their modern English derivatives. More importantly, comparisons of the old meanings with the new ones illustrate why modern words have their meanings. The book is organized so it is easy to use. Words are listed alphabetically. Definitions from standard sources appear on alternate pages, which also feature carefully designed sample sentences using the words in the most relevant practical situations. A pronunciation guide is also included. Quizzes appear periodically throughout Part II, allowing the reader to make sure that he or she fully understands what has been learned. This unique aspect of Masterful Words is just one of the characteristics that makes it one-of-a-kind in its field.

Zeugma - Zeugma (from the Greek word "ζεύγμα", meaning "yoke") is a figure of speech in which one word applies to two others in different senses of that word, and in some cases only logically applies to one of the other two words. Dictionaries differ on the exact definition of zeugma, some not including the lack of logical application to one word (eg Oxford), and others insisting on it (eg Hutchinson's Dictionary of Difficult Words).

Somatic cell - A somatic cell is generally taken to mean any cell forming the body of an organism: the word "somatic" is derived from the Greek word sōma, meaning "body". Greek love - Greek love as a phrase can be used as a euphemism or code word for homosexuality and homosexual sex, or as a direct reference to the pure and idealised Greek paederastic love. It is especially associated with literary figures such as Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde, who would have used it as a code word in university, as homosexuality was illegal.

Proto-Greek language - The Proto-Greek language is the common ancestor of the Greek dialects, including the Mycenean language, the classical Greek dialects Attic-Ionic, Aeolic, Doric and North-Western Greek, and ultimately the Koine and Modern Greek. Some scholars would include the fragmentary Ancient Macedonian language, either as descended from an earlier "Proto-Hellenic" language, or by definition including it among the descendents of Proto-Greek.
